How many times hasn’t this happened – Your Domain Registration Lapsed
It is something that only comes up once every year or two, so unless you . . .
diarise it, you will very likely forget all about it!
And it is amazing just how many times that happens.
We ask our website clients to transfer their domains to our management so that we can keep a track of this for them.
At Hotpink Websites, we even offer to pay for the domain renewal each year for you.
But if you are not one of our clients or have not transferred your domain to our management, there are a couple of things that you should look out for:
Correct email address
One of the biggest causes of expired domain names comes from out of date email addresses.
Your domain registrar will send you email reminders up to 3 months in advance of the renewal date for your domain name.
But if your email address has changed for any reason, you will not get those email reminders.
And most likely you will not remember when your domain is due for renewal.
The result – domain expires, website and emails go down, and a lot of running around to get it all back.
How can you do this?
Find your domain registrar and login to your account.
If you do not know know or remember this you can:
- Do a “whois” search on your domain name to find the registrar – http://whois.com.au/
- Submit a password reset or retrieval to get your password.
The 2nd step will be a problem if your email address is no longer current, so you may have to call the registrar on the phone to confirm your identity.
Once logged in, navigate to your account settings and check:
- your email address
- the domain name expiry date
- note the date in your diary with a recurring appointment
Expiry Date
It’s pretty easy to record your domain name expiry dates in your Outlook or iCal calendars with a recurring appointment.
Set the reminder at least 1 month in advance of the expiry date.
Even if your email address changes and you do not get the reminders, you will still have time to attend to the renewals.
Well, that is quite simple really!
.
What should you do now?
- Check the email address listed on your domain name registration.
- Record the renewal date in your diary.
