What affects people’s decision to open and read an email, or instead, to hit the Junk Mail button?
The first thing that people think when they receive an email is:
Who is sending me this email?
Research shows that more than 52% will ALWAYS consider the Sender Name before reading an email, and a further 34% take the Sender Name into account most of the time.
That’s more than 86%
Only 30% will ALWAYS consider the subject line before reading an email, and 47% most of the time.
The Sender Email Address also comes into play, with 37% checking it ALWAYS and 33% most of the time.
What does this tell you?
If you want people to open and read your email, then:
It is vital that they recognise the Sender Name of the email first and foremost.
Even more so than a catchy subject line.
So make your Sender Name recognisable:
– your name
– your business name
– but preferably your name, because people rather receive an email from a real person
– or both <yourname> – <businessname>
– keep it consistent from week to week, so that it becomes recognisable
A good subject line is also important.
A respectable email address is important, and a yahoo or gmail or bigpond or optusnet email address just isn’t going to cut it.
