A couple of weeks ago, a friend of a friend of a friend on Facebook went on a mini-rant about e-books. The claim was that . . .
e-books are “dead”
Really ??
This person didn’t value e-books or enjoy reading them, so therefore they were “no longer of any value”.
While attitudes are changing, I contend that many people still want to hold a book or piece of paper or a printed e-book in their hand to read it. iPads and book reading devices do not suit everyone!
As an aside, a person’s preference for taking in information can be affected by aspects of their personality, which we talked about last week.
First rule of marketing:
“Do not gauge the market
by your own responses!”
Just because you like something does not mean that your market, (your potential customers), will also like it.
. . . . AND . . . .
Just because you do NOT like something does not mean that your market won’t like it too.
Market Research
So part of your market research should include finding out how your clients and prospective clients prefer to communicate.
e.g. e-books may not be the best way to reach teenagers – and – Facebook may not be the best way to reach senior executives ??
BUT don’t take my word for that !
Do your own research in your own market niche!
Perceived Value
An e-book often has a greater perceived value than a video file on your website or on YouTube, because it can be downloaded and stored privately on the person’s own computer. There is a sense of ownership.
Many New Options
It is true that there are many new media available to use for online marketing, including:
– the e-book, whether free or paid
– your blog
– audio files
– video files and YouTube
– pay-per-view video streaming
– webinars
– an email series (auto-responders) are still a hot favourite
– a self paced learning course
