You’ve probably read the reports of people finding content on their mobile phone belonging to the previous owner.
This has included photos and contact info.
With more and more of our personal lives going on to our mobile devices, this is a timely warning . . .
Returning your phone or tablet under warranty
The faulty device would be scrapped . . . never to be seen again.
But 9 times out of 10, your device is refurbished and then sold or rented under a plan to the next user, (who presumes that it is “new”)!
You would think then that all of your data would be wiped from your device before being given to the next user.
And again, 9 times out of 10, this is probably true.
But what about those that slip through the cracks and are reissued with some of your personal information on board?
Selling your phone or tablet
Selling your phone or tablet presents an even more serious situation because the onus is completely on you to initialise the device before handing it on.
It is completely your responsibility to take the steps necessary to clear information from your phone before handing it on to someone else.
Remember that your devices contain so much more information these days than just a few photos and contacts.
Most seriously, they contain passwords to your life – to web pages like Facebook, and maybe even your bank accounts.
Here’s what to do
Look up the instructions online from the manufacturer of your device or take it back to the place where you bought it for help.
Or find a local technician or repairer who knows how to do this for you.
Before giving away or selling your iOS device, be sure to erase your content and settings (in Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings).
When you erase your content, Find My iPhone and Activation Lock are also turned off.
For more information, see the Apple Support article What to do before selling or giving away your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
And if your phone is stolen
. . . remember that if your phone is stolen, there are steps that you can take to minimise the damage, including disabling the phone.
Well, that is quite simple really!

Some people regard private enterprise as a predatory tiger to be shot. Others look on it as a cow they can milk. Not enough people see it as a healthy horse, pulling a sturdy wagon.
