When putting out a new price list for your business, you wouldn’t let your printer decide what prices to put on it, would you?
When deciding what products to stock in your business, you generally wouldn’t let your suppliers make that decision for you, would you?
And when buying a new . . .

car or van for your business, you don’t let the dealer make the decision for you, do you?
Even though there might be a lot of persuasion involved, you’d like to think that you actually made the decision. LOL
So why do some people engage a web company to build a website for them and then expect them to:
- Create all the website content – information about the business
- Describe their products and services
- Add offers and deals
- Decide which products to add to the shopping cart
- Decide the product prices
. . . all without any input from the client whatsoever.
Believe it or not, this does happen . . .
No matter how clear we make it that building a website is a joint collaboration between the web company and the client, we still very occasionally have a client that thinks we know more about their business than they do.
We may have better marketing ideas, and better knowledge about web design.
We may even be able to suggest changes that will improve the performance of the business – we are great business coaches too.
However, despite the breadth of our business experience, we don’t claim to be the experts on your business.
That would be you!
You are the expert in your business.
You know all about your products.
You know the tips and secrets of your particular industry.
You have the inside line on what works and what does not.
So, if you come across a web designer who offers to build your new website without any input from you, (and I have heard stories of this happening), I would seriously question what they are going to provide for you.
And question what possible value such a website would have for your business.
Conversely, if you want a new website built for you without having any input into it, then stop and question whether this will be the best solution for your business in the long run.
Be prepared to work with your web developer in the same way that you work with any other supplier to your business.
Well, that is quite simple really!

Remember – Be prepared to work with your web developer

Bravo, Philip! It amazes me how often I interview a client and they appear to know nothing about their business. Their USP – “High quality service.” Give me a break. The truth is, no matter which way you look at it, you must work in partnership with your web developer, copywriter, graphic designer, etc., if you want great results.
