There are many reasons why a child holds back from using the diving board, and just jumps into the pool from the side.
And yet, using the diving board is so much more exciting and fun … so much more rewarding.
And once he or she has done it the first time, they never look back.
So what is it that stops them from having this great experience?I’m not really telling you anything new by saying . . . in one word, it is fear!
- The fear of doing it wrong.
- The fear of embarrassment.
- The fear of getting hurt.
- The fear of the unknown.
- The fear of rejection.
We have all experienced this at sometime or other in our lives. The fear of not getting it right … first time out.
There’s something that we would like to do but we are held back with the overriding question,
“What if I get it wrong?”
What if we get it wrong and someone sees us – how embarrassing!
What if someone sees us getting it wrong and then rejects us?
I don’t know how to do it, I don’t even know where to start. It’s all a bit unknown to me.
It’s just like the young man, (or lady, let’s be gender equal here LOL), who wants to ask somebody out on a date. Or even just wants to talk to them to say hello.
All of the same fears and questions come up.
And business is really just like that.
Whether it be approaching a new client, asking for a sale, or asking for a business referral to take to your business network group, the same fears can come up and inhibit us from taking action.
I really do think that is the only reason that people do not get business referrals for their trusted business colleagues.
How to change this
Yes, this is a problem because your business colleagues who are bringing you business referrals also expect to receive referrals from you.
Or maybe your colleagues aren’t bringing you referrals either, and your group is not succeeding in this area. It’s just easier to say that new referrals are not the main purpose of your group, and let the issue slide.
If that is happening in your group, then it is time for a change.
As with everything in business, training and experience is key.
Have an experienced business owner explain the “how-to”, even down to using a script to get started.
With more experience the script can be developed or changed; but it is a good place to start.
The most certain way to get comfortable doing something is through repetition and experience.
And the easiest and ‘safest’ way to do this is by role-playing with friends and colleagues.
This may seem a bit obvious, but it is amazing how often it is ignored.
Well, that is quite simple really!
