In the last post on Business Networking Tips, I talked about the Poker Player . . . the person that showed up and dealt out his business cards like a poker player deals out playing cards.
That person is looking at their network as being limited to just that immediate group of people.
By not building relationships with those people, the Poker Player is ignoring his extended network . . .

those 20 – 30 – 100 or more people that each of those people know and network with.
It’s a short sighted view.
That is also the reason why the extra time invested in weekly networking events, (instead of monthly events), pays dividends.
The more frequent interactions build the friendships and connections far more rapidly.
So . . .
It stands to reason doesn’t it ? !
6 Degrees of Separation
Before the internet and Facebook, there was this saying that we are only 6 degrees of separation from any other person on the planet.
That is, if we want to meet a particular person, then we already know somebody, who knows somebody, who knows somebody, who knows somebody, who knows somebody, who knows the person that we want to meet.
And that is what networking is really all about.
Making contact with the person that we want to talk to but do not yet know.
Getting a warm introduction to that person that will run much smoother than our cold call.
Social Media
And of course, social media has changed all of that now.
I’d say that we are only 1 or at most 2 degrees of separation now from most of the people that we want to meet . . . if they are not already friends with us on Facebook, (even though we may not remember it !! LOL)
So how are you going to take advantage of this information for your business?
Who do you want to meet?
Don’t just network for any random contact.
Decide consciously who will be a key contact for your business.
It might be a specific person who you’ve heard can provide what you need in business – a service or raw material that you need.
Or it might be a specific centre of business influence who can refer lots of new clients, or one key client, that you want to meet.
It might not be a specific person, but a specific type of person, or a person engaged in a specific industry or activity that you want to meet.
Once you get clear on who or what it is that you want, then you can start laser focusing your efforts in finding them.
Well, that is quite simple really!
