Here’s the next in our series on good Business Networking Tips.
You’ve all heard this one before, but it bears repeating because we all still do it wrong.
It takes a lot of focus and effort to master . . .
We have all encountered this at a Networking Event, and have probably been guilty of doing it ourselves at one time or another.
You’ve met someone new and they just talk
Maybe it’s nerves, or maybe something else.
But you know that you can’t wait to get away from them, much less do business with them.
OK, that’s the extreme.
But here’s the thing.
Nature gave us one tongue and two ears so we could hear twice as much as we speak.
Firstly, the person who listens the best will do more business that the person who does not listen.
Next, you should not be in a rush to be telling the other person about you and what you can do AT LEAST UNTIL you have heard what they need.
This is a basic rule of sales.
And networking is all about sales.
Not making a sale on the day, although that can happen.
You should focus on “selling” the other person on building a relationship with you.
At this stage, you may not be aware of what form that relationship is going to take.
Maybe you will sell them something.
Maybe you will buy something from them.
Hopefully, you will end up referring business to each other, and become good friends into the bargain.
Well, that really is quite simple!
What should you do now?
- You have 2 ears and 1 mouth. Use them in that proportion.

Why did God give me two ears and one mouth? So that I will hear more and talk less.
