Many rules have changed over the years.
The use of PowerPoint as a presentation tool, once mandatory, is now old hat, and often seen as outdated.
Same with email marketing . . . rules that applied to marketing in the past should now . . .
be seen as a challenge to do better.
When was marketing ever as simple as Black and?
Who could ever say definitely that a whacky marketing idea would never work?
Fact is, so long as you don’t break any laws, all strategies are up for consideration.
And having said that, make your own checks on practicality and legality before taking action, (as we are not lawyers).
And as with all marketing strategies, always build in a way to Test and Measure your results.
That’s made easier with email marketing because yoursoftware will tell you what is working and what is not.
Don’t assume that any strategy will work for you, even if it worked for someone else.
And don’t assume that “breaking” any of the following “rules” will work for you.
But at least . . .
use it them a catalyst to get your brain thinking about new and different ways to be unique in the marketplace.
Challenge the Old Rules
So here are some marketing rules that you might consider challenging in your next campaign.
1. Challenge the list of “Never Use” words.
Having said that, beware of using words that trigger spam filters.
2. Don’t buy email lists.
If not, then think how else you can generate your lists?
3. Never make the Unsubscribe button obvious on your emails.
How might people react if you did?
4. Only send emails mid-week.
What if you send emails when no-one else is?
5. Never send emails with speeling errers . . . especially in the subject.
Why not draw attention to your message?
6. Don’t send emails too frequently.
Maybe not over a prolonged period, but why not in quick, short bursts from time to time.
7. Never send so-called ‘ugly’ emails
Again, why not draw attention to your message?
Here are some more to contemplate:
Don’t send emails at the end of the day.
Don’t send emails on weekends.
Don’t send emails on Friday afternoons.
Always keep a balance of text and images.
Never send just an image.
Never send just text.
Never use all CAPITALS in your content, AND ESPECIALLY NOT IN THE SUBJECT
c. Building your list
Never charge people to collect their email address in your mailing list.
AND AGAIN . . .
We are not saying that breaking any of these rules will necessarily get you better results, or any results.
But it is worth reviewing them against what you are doing now.
Sometimes, just breaking one taboo marketing rule is all it takes to get awesome results!
And always Test and Measure any changes that you make.
Well, that is quite simple really!
